How to Remove a Cube on a Rubik's Cube

A traditional Rubik's Cube, or Rubik's 3x3 Cube, is a three-dimensional puzzle game that features 27 small cubes organized in three layers -- top, middle and bottom -- of nine cubes per layer. Each cube has a colored tile that you must match against other cubes/tiles to create a solid color on each side, or "face," of the game. Other variations of the game -- additional cubes, different shapes and patterned sides -- also exist. Typically, a person removes a small cube to cheat at the game or to lubricate the Rubik's Cube to help move the cubes more smoothly or faster.

Instructions

    • 1

Set your Rubik's Cube on a table.

    • 2

Turn the top layer of cubes right or left so that the points of the corner edge cubes rest above the center edge cubes in the middle layer.

    • 3

Place your thumb on the side of one of the center edge cubes in the top layer. Press against and up on the cube to loosen it from the game; or slide the head of a flat-head screwdriver under it and lift the screwdriver handle slowly.

    • 4

Remove the cube by hand if possible; or move the screwdriver around under the cube and continue to lift up on the handle until the cube pops free of the main body.

    • 5

Repeat to remove additional cubes from the main body as desired.
