How to Make a Practice Lightsaber

Many Star Wars fans enjoy staging battles using lightsabers with wooden or plastic rods for blades. If you don't know what you're doing, however, this is a good way to hurt yourself. A good alternative for the purposes of practice and instruction is what is known as a "boffing" weapon. These weapons are covered in soft foam, allowing you to take and give whacks without doing serious damage.

Things You'll Need

  • PVC pipe, 3/4 inch diameter, 34 inches long
  • Pool noodle, 29 inches long
  • Duct tape, silver
  • Duct tape, green or red

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the pool noodle onto the PVC pipe. The noodle should extend one inch past the end of the pipe, with six inches of bare pipe on the other end. This exposed pipe will be the hilt.

    • 2

Wrap a piece of red or green duct tape from the handle, up and around the end of the noodle and back down to the handle. This will loosely secure the noodle in place. Be careful not to compact the foam noodle at the tip or you will expose part of the hard PVC pipe.

    • 3

Repeat the last step several more times, overlapping the tape slightly, until the entire noodle is covered.

    • 4

Wrap the exposed PVC pipe in silver duct tape to form the hilt.
