How to Use Silly Putty for Molding

Silly Putty is a safe, fun, elastic toy that has been in homes since the 1950s. It is known in chemistry as polymethylsilicane, which sounds rather intimidating, though fortunately, you don't have to be a scientist to enjoy it. Because of its soft, pliable composition, Silly Putty is ideally suited for a number of crafts. One of the easiest and most rewarding is to use it to use it to make molds of interesting things around the house. This takes only a few simple steps and you are in good shape.

Things You'll Need

  • Container of Silly Putty
  • Items to mold (coins, shaped tins, etc.)
  • Waxed paper (optional)
  • Cookie sheet (optional)
  • Refrigerator tray (optional)
  • Casting material

Instructions

  1. Making Silly Putty Molds

    • 1

      Remove Silly Putty from container and knead putty by hand until it has an even, bubble-free consistency.

      Press item to be cast into the Silly Putty, making sure to press firmly enough to fill all the cracks and crevices.

      (Optional) Place waxed paper on a cookie sheet.

      (Optional) Place Silly Putty on the cookie sheet.

      (Optional) Refrigerate for at least an hour.

      Remove items from Silly Putty, taking caution not to allow it to be distorted as you do so.

      Pour casting material into Silly Putty molds.

      Allow casting material to harden for the amount of time recommended by the product you are using.

      Remove the Silly Putty from around your molds and you are done!
