Halloween Decorations
Insects and spiders with glow sticks for limbs are an effective Halloween decoration. Use painted styrofoam spheres to form the body of the bug, then stick rigid glow sticks in the spheres for the legs. For larger, more complicated bugs, glue or wire pairs of rigid glow sticks together at an angle to form spindly, jointed legs. Or, use bendable glow sticks to give the creature a loose-limbed and droopier look. Suspend the bug from a ceiling or tree branch with fishing line. Or, make a glowing spider web out of bendable glow sticks.
Dreamcatchers
Dreamcatchers consist of a circular frame with an interwoven pattern of beads and string. They originated with the Ojibwa tribe of Native Americans as wards against malicious nocturnal spirits. Traditionally, the circular frame is made from a supple, young tree branch that has been twisted in on itself. However, a fun variation on this idea is to use a bendable glow stick instead. This will bathe the string and beads in an otherworldly light, creating mesmerizing, intricate patterns for the child to enjoy. What is more, the combination of a small amount of light with the legend of the dreamcatcher's evil-fighting powers makes this project ideal for a who still requires a night light.
Glowstick-Tac-Toe
Have children use rigid green glow sticks build a 3-foot by 3-foot grid on the floor. Turn off the lights and have them play tic-tac-toe using red and blue glow sticks in place of the traditional Xs and Os.
