Consider your usage needs. If you plan to use your batteries frequently, choose alkaline batteries with a recharging function. However, if you don't plan to use your batteries frequently, select lithium batteries. They are better at holding a charge.
Plan where you will use the batteries. If you will use the batteries in your home, regular alkaline batteries will work fine. If you plan to take your small electronics into an extreme weather situation, choose rugged battery that will stand up to high temperatures and severe conditions. A nickel cadmium battery is durable.
Keep practicality paramount. Although alkaline batteries are the cheapest and most widely available, they are not always up to your usage needs. Similarly, nickel cadmium or lithium ion batteries may provide too much performance at a high cost to be worth using. Weigh the pros and cons of each battery's effectiveness to decide which type you need.
