How to Make Slime in Glow Sticks

Glow sticks are not just for Halloween parties and raves. They are also a fun at home science project you can make with just a few supplies that are cheap and easy to get. The slime inside of glow sticks is made with zinc sulfide powder that you can order on the Internet. It's safe for kids to handle and easy to clean up. You can put it into all kinds of glass or clear containers and charge it up under strong lights.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy zinc sulfide powder online at a school supply store that sells stuff for science projects like Constructive Playthings or a store that specializes just in glow powder like Glow Inc. (see Resources). The glow powder comes in lots of fun colors, but you need to make sure that you get one that is compatible with water based mediums.

    • 2

Find a transparent container to house your glow slime in. You can make a traditional glow stick by using a glass beaker, or you could be more creative and put your glow slime in a round glass Christmas tree ornament or an empty, clear perfume bottle. The more transparent your container is, the easier it will be to see your glowing slime.

    • 3

Put your rubber gloves on. The glow slime is not dangerous, but it can stain your hands and clothes. If you do get glow slime on you, try washing it off with regular soap and water.

    • 4

Place a small spoonful of your glow powder in your glass container. Making glow slime is not an exact science and the powder will glow with or without the oil, so use as much as you like. The oil will only make the slime viscous and slightly dilute the glow if you use a lot.

    • 5

Pour oil slowly into the powder while stirring with the spoon. Stop when your slime is the color and consistency you like. Hold the slime under a bright light or in sunlight for a few minutes, then take it in the dark and enjoy its glow.
