Assess the problem. Common problems include a handle that spins backward, the machine releasing gumballs without a coin even when you have the coin mechanism in place and an ill fit with the gumball stand.
Disassemble the gumball machine. Loosen the top screw lock so you can remove the globe and gaskets from the base. Remove the brushoff plate and then lift the coin mechanism out of the gumball machine.
Locate the restricting dog arm and examine its springs. The dog arm is a rectangular part with rounded corners and that has a hole in one end. When the dog arm has proper tension on it, it blocks the gumballs from coming out unless a coin is inserted before the handle is turned. Without proper tension, the coin mechanism won't work properly and the machine will give out free gumballs. Look for the dog arm and springs by the gear wheel. Use a screwdriver to tighten the dog arm springs. If this corrects the problem, reassemble the gumball machine.
Remove the nine-point gear wheel and the handle from the coin mechanism. Lay it flat and remove the four corner screws so you can lift away the retaining plate. Check that the brass half moon dog arm and the safety pin are in proper position. The safety pin should be pressing against the brass piece, which prevents the coin wheel from turning backward. If they aren't in proper position, adjust them. Then reassemble the coin mechanism and return it to the gumball machine. Reattach the globe.
Remove the baseplate of the machine to find the stand adjustment screw. Attach the baseplate to your stand and tighten the adjustment screw for a secure fit. Reattach the gumball machine to the baseplate and stand. Your gumball machine should now sit on the stand securely.
