How to Make Custom Mini Figures

The miniature LEGO characters with yellow heads are known as mini figures. The figures can be customized with paint and modeling clay to create characters from your favorite cartoon or LEGO versions of you and your friends. Before making your custom figure, you will first need to create a design to work from. This design will give you the blueprint for turning any extra mini figure you have into an entirely custom figure. These figures can then be attached to any other LEGO creations you have made from the building bricks.

Instructions

  1. Design

    • 1

Print out images of the character you want to use as the basis for your custom mini figure. Use several images of the character in one particular costume, such as Spider-Man's black costume or Mario in his red overalls.

    • 2

Write a list of the main colors and characteristics of the character. For example, Mario wears red and blue and he has a hat and mustache.

    • 3

Print out a blank image of a mini figure from a website such as Custom Mini Fig, the Mini Fig Customization Network or MCN. Sketch your character's costume onto the blank image without going outside the template. Draw any extensions of the character, such as a hat or hair that will be made with modeling clay.

    • 4

Draw the face of your character on the mini figure image. Simplify the face to include only exaggerated features, such as wrinkles on an older character or an eye patch on a pirate character.

    Head

    • 5

Place a lump of modeling clay onto a flat surface. Stand a toothpick in the center of the clay.

    • 6

Push a pea-sized amount of clay into the gap under the head. Place the head on the toothpick to secure it in place.

    • 7

Color the head yellow or any flesh color using paint markers. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 8

Add the face to the head with a black paint marker. Add facial details such as red cheeks or a pink scar with the paint markers. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 9

Pull the head up and off the toothpick. Scrape out the clay inside the head using the end of a toothpick.

    Hair and Hats

    • 10

Pull off a piece of modeling clay that is roughly the size of a die.

    • 11

Place the clay on the top of your mini figure's head.

    • 12

Mold the clay around the head to match the hair or hat of your character. Pull off pieces of the clay for a better fit.

    • 13

Add details into the clay using a toothpick or utility knife. Allow the clay to dry overnight.

    • 14

Paint the dried clay with acrylic paint and allow the paint to dry.

    Body

    • 15

Lay a sheet of newspaper on your table. Pull the legs and arms off the torso and lay all the parts on the newspaper.

    • 16

Outline the design for your mini figure's costume with a black paint marker. Wait for the marker to dry and turn the parts over to sketch the design for the back of the costume.

    • 17

Fill in the design with the colors you marked on your mini figure drawing. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 18

Reassemble the mini figure's torso, legs, arms and head to finish your character.
