How to Make Estes Rockets

Estes model rockets have been a source of entertainment for children since 1958, when Vern Estes designed the first machine to mass-produce model rockets. Estes rockets come as kits, with everything required for assembly. First-time rocket builders generally will need to make small investments in a rocket launchpad, cardboard engines, wadding to prevent the rocket from catching on fire after it's launched, and paint. The rocket kits are made in different degrees of complexity for everyone from beginners to hobbyists with years of model-making experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the kit. Check the instructions to make sure all parts are included. Set them on a table or other flat surface so you don't lose them.

    • 2

Read the instructions carefully. The kits will include step-by-step instructions for building the model rocket. Since parts of the assembly will likely require glue, you should work on a newspaper or other cover to prevent damage to furniture.

    • 3

Begin your project by assembling the rocket's engine mount. This will hold the small engine used to propel the rocket. Install the shock cord, which will open the parachute when the rocket reaches its highest point.

    • 4

Assemble the rocket body. Attach the parachute to the shock cord. Allow glue to dry for at least 24 hours before you paint the rocket or apply stickers.

    • 5

Fold the parachute loosely and place it in the rocket body. Insert the engine in the rocket. Be sure you have the correct engine. An oversized engine won't fit into the rocket body; forcing it to fit can destroy the rocket. An undersized engine will result in a complete launch failure.
