How to Care for a Power Wheels Battery

A Power Wheels vehicle is an electrical toy with a seat for a single child. It also a rechargeable battery that requires regular maintenance, including charging and storage. The battery is within the toy's plastic casing and is similar to an automotive battery. The Power Wheels battery uses a power cord that connects to a standard 110-volt electrical outlet for recharging. The battery doesn't last forever--it requires replacement after one to three years, depending on how much the toy vehicle is used.

Instructions

  1. Charging the Power Wheels Battery

    • 1

Park the Power Wheels vehicle close to an electrical outlet. Raise the vehicle's seat to access the battery.

    • 2

Plug the Power Wheels battery charger's connector into the right side of the vehicle's battery. The charger connector will go in only one way; you will hear a snapping sound when it is connected.

    • 3

Plug the power pack end of the battery charger into the electrical outlet. The charging indicator light on the power pack will illuminate.

    • 4

Charge the battery for a minimum of 14 hours before disconnecting the charger. If your Power Wheels vehicle contains more than one battery, repeat steps 2 through 4 in this section for each battery.

If the battery fails to charge and contains a fuse, proceed to the "Replacing a Power Wheels Battery Fuse" section. Older Power Wheels batteries contain a replaceable fuse.

Newer Power Wheels batteries contain an internal fuse that is not replaceable---replace the battery with a new one. Power Wheels batteries are available directly from Fisher-Price/Mattel and electronic outlets specializing in Power Wheels parts and components.

Replacing a Power Wheels Battery Fuse

    • 5

Raise the vehicle's seat to access the battery and locate the battery's connector harness leading from the battery to the vehicle. Grasp the battery connector harness and press down on the plastic clip to release the connector from the battery.

    • 6

Raise the battery from the vehicle and place the battery on a flat surface. Locate the battery's fuse on the top of side of the battery, if your Power Wheels battery is older and contains a replaceable battery.

    • 7

Use pliers to remove the fuse gently from the battery. Wear work gloves to get a better grip on the pliers, if needed. Compare the fuse to the fuse diagram of a good fuse in your Power Wheels owner's manual or look to see if the fuse's element, center portion, or ends are brown or black, indicating a blown fuse.

    • 8

Insert a new fuse, specifically for the Power Wheels battery, into the fuse compartment, if the old fuse is blown. Reinstall the battery into the vehicle, connect the battery connector harness and make sure it is firmly into the terminal.

Power Wheels fuses are available directly from Fisher-Price/Mattel and electronic outlets that specialize in Power Wheels parts and components.

Repeat steps 3 and 4 if your Power Wheels vehicle contains more than one battery.

    • 9

Close the seat and complete the steps in the "Charging the Power Wheels Battery" section.

Cleaning the Battery Terminals and Connector

    • 10

Raise the vehicle's seat to access the battery and locate the battery's connector harness leading from the battery to the vehicle. Grasp the battery connector harness and press down on the plastic clip to release the connector from the battery.

    • 11

Sand the battery terminal on the side of the battery with a piece of 80-grit or higher sandpaper to remove any corrosion from the terminal.

    • 12

Wipe the battery terminal and battery connector harness with a soft cloth or rag to remove any loose corrosion and grime that may have built up.

    • 13

Reconnect the battery connector harness and make sure it is firmly into the terminal. Close the seat and complete the steps in the "Charging the Power Wheels Battery" section.

Replacing the Power Wheels Battery Connector

    • 14

Raise the vehicle's seat to access the battery and locate the battery's connector harness leading from the battery to the vehicle. Grasp the battery connector harness and press down on the plastic clip to release the connector from the battery.

    • 15

Raise the battery from the vehicle and place the battery on a flat surface. Use a wire cutter/stripper to cut the wires leading into the battery connector harness leading from the vehicle. If the wires leading into the connector are frayed, cut before the frayed portion.

    • 16

Insert one of the cut wires into the wire stripper component of the wire cutter/stripper and pull the stripper gently to remove the insulation surrounding the wire. Repeat step for each wire that needs to be stripped.

    • 17

Repeat step 3 for the wires on the new Power Wheels battery connector harness. Connect like-colored wires leading from the harness to like-colored wires leading from the stripped wires from the vehicle. Twist the wires with your fingers.

A new Power Wheels battery connector is available directly from Fisher-Price/Mattel and electronic outlets that specialize in Power Wheels parts and components.

    • 18

Place a twist-on wire nut onto each of the twisted wires to cover the exposed wires. Wrap a piece of electrical tape around the wire nuts to secure the wire connections.

    • 19

Reinstall the battery into the vehicle, connect the battery connector harness and make sure it is firmly into the terminal. Close the seat and complete the steps in the "Charging the Power Wheels Battery" section.
