How to Make a Superball

Making a rubber-like superball combines the fun of a high-bouncing ball with a little science. You can create a superball at home with two common liquid chemicals. The chemicals react with each other when mixed in the proper ratio, which creates a solid substance. Forming the substance into a ball allows the material to bounce like a superball.

Things You'll Need

Sodium silicate solution
Measuring cup with milliliter measure
Paper cup
Ethyl alcohol
Stir stick

Instructions

  Measure 20 mL of sodium silicate solution in a measuring cup. Pour the solution into a paper cup.

  Clean the measuring cup with warm soapy water.

  Measure 10 mL of ethyl alcohol in the measuring cup. Pour the measured liquid into the same cup containing the sodium silicate solution.

  Stir the two liquids with a stir stick until they form a solid mass.

  Wet your hands with clean water. Empty the solid mass into your hands.

  Roll your hands in a circle motion to form the mass into the shape of the ball. Wet the ball in running water while forming the ball.
