How to Choose an Airsoft Weapon

Choosing the proper Airsoft weapon for your experience level and playing environment can mean the difference between winning or losing. You do not want to show up on the game field and realize you are not properly equipped to defend yourself once play begins. It is important that you know what types of Airsoft weapons are available and their basic functions, so that you make the correct choice before going engaging in a skirmish. Once you familiarize yourself with the Airsoft weapons on the market, you will become a more successful player.

Consider your experience with Airsoft. Spring-action Airsoft guns are good beginner weapons. These must be cocked each time they are used, placing tension on a spring that is released when you pull the trigger. If you have had some experience with Airsoft, then you might want to consider upgrading to an electric Airsoft gun or gas-powered gun. Electric guns use a battery to power an electric motor that shoots pellets in automatic or semi-automatic fashion. Gas-powered guns use the force from pressurized gas to shoot BBs.

Look at the environment you will play in. Are you going to be in a close-quarter indoor setting? Are you playing in a Military Simulation outside in the woods? These factors play a role in the Airsoft weapon you should choose. Projectiles from spring-action pistols generally travel around 200 to 250 feet per second, while sniper rifle projectiles travel at speeds well over 400 feet per second.

If you are playing in a large area, you will not be able to compete very well if you have only a spring action pistol. Conversely, you could injure another player if you shot them with a sniper rifle from 10 feet away.

Examine the type of Airsoft game you will play. You might play a traditional military game where you capture the other team's flag. However, there are other possible scenarios for Airsoft skirmishes. One such style is an every-man-for-himself type of battle. With this style there are no teams--the last person standing wins the game. The style of play has a bearing on the type of weapon you should use.

Electric guns work well for many scenarios, often giving you the option to use an automatic mode of fire. These are quicker and more powerful than spring action and are what many players choose for outdoor military-style games. Gas-powered guns may work in these situations, but few of them have automatic firing capability. Spring-action guns are usually only carried as a sidearm, for close range shots.
