What Is a Permanent Marker Made Of?

According to the most widely known brand of permanent marker, Sharpie, a marker is considered permanent if it contains dyes or pigments and/or adheres to most surfaces. The markers contain a mixture of dyes, pigments and solvents.
  1. Composition

    • Sharpie permanent markers contain dyes, pigments and a solvent mixture of butanol, propanol, diacetone alcohol and ethanol. Additional solvents in the inks include alcohol, ketone, xylene and glycol ethers.

    Effects of Ingredients

    • The pigments in the ink determine the marker's resistance to fading. The Sharpie company claims its particular mixture of pigments is highly effective in resisting product fading. The company claims writing produced with the Sharpie will last perhaps a few months when exposed to outdoor elements, and as long as several years in an indoor and protected environment.

    Toxicity

    • The ingredients in a permanent marker are not considered toxic, when used according to instructions. However, they are not to be ingested or placed upon skin.
