How to Make a Pull Toy Car

Small children enjoy toys that move or make sounds, especially ones they can push or pull. Making pull-behind toys can be a satisfying experience for you and provide hours of enjoyment for your child. When making toys for your children, it is important to remember that small children eventually put everything in their mouth. Use materials that are nontoxic and avoid small parts that might be a choking hazard.

Things You'll Need

  • Large plastic coffee can
  • Drill with 3/8-inch bit
  • Ruler
  • Soft braided cotton twine, 48 inches long
  • Scissors
  • 4 regular-sized round plastic coffee lids

Instructions

    • 1

Place the large coffee can on its side and use the power drill to make a hole in the front and rear side corners. If your plastic coffee can is round, drill the holes 1 inch back from each end of the can. Turn the can around and drill holes in the same places on the other side.

    • 2

Measure the width of the coffee can with the ruler. This width plus 4 inches will be the length of the twine axles.

    • 3

Cut two sections of the soft cotton twine the same length as the width of the coffee can plus 4 inches using scissors.

    • 4

Remove the large coffee can screw-on lid and make a hole in the center with the drill. Push the remainder of the cotton cord through the lid, tie a knot in the end of the cord on the inside of the lid and screw the lid back on the coffee can.

    • 5

Make a hole in the center of each small coffee can lid with the power drill.

    • 6

Tie a knot in the end of one of the axle cords and push the other end of the cord through one of the wheels from the outside. Do this with one of the other wheels also.

    • 7

Push the free end of one of the axle cords through the front hole in the coffee can and out through the hole on the opposite side. Push the second axle cord through the hole at the other end of the coffee can and out through the other side. A piece of hanger wire is a good tool for pushing the cord through the axle holes.

    • 8

Push one of the remaining wheels onto the free end of one axle cord and tie a knot to hold it in place. Repeat with the last coffee lid wheel on the other axle and your pull car is done.
