How to Make a Suruga Kite

Most of us are used to creating the traditional diamond-shaped kites. While it is fun to stick to the ordinary designs, it would be more challenging to explore other types of kites. A Suruga kite is a well-known Japanese kite that was named after the old prefecture of Shizouka. Its shape is similar to one owned by a warlord named Imagawa Yoshimoto. You can finish making your own Suruga kite in one or two hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your ripstop nylon on a flat surface and draw the lines with the pencil to cut out the sail.

    • 2

Cut one stick measuring 9 1/4 inches long to place across the narrow side at the top of the kite. Put double-stick tape right across the top edge and place the stick across the top.

    • 3

Put another layer of double-stick tape on the stick and fold it again. The stick should be longer than the sail, about 1/2 inch on each side.

    • 4

Cut the stick to measure 14 1/2 inches long and place it at the center of the top and bottom part of your kite. Tape the stick into position on its ends, overlapping the front side of your sail.

    • 5

Cut two more sticks, each measuring 16 1/4 inches long and place them at the top, extending 1/2 inch and flush on bottom. Put tape at the bottom of the sail, overlapping the tape in front of it.

    • 6

Tie the top ends to the horizontal stick using string. Tie the three sticks together at the crossing section.

    • 7

Cut 30 inches of string using the scissors to serve as the bridle and attach it on each top corner. Cut another 30-inch string and attach it to the top bridle by making a head knot.

    • 8

Attach the ribbons at the ends of the kite with tape to create its tails.

    • 9

Cut another 25-inch string and wind it on a hobby stick. Attach this to the adjustable bridle loop and adjust the bridle to make sure that the bottom of the kite is slightly lower than the top.
