How do I Make Silly Gak With Borax?

Mud is a kid magnet that most parents would rather not deal with. But there's no denying a child's irresistible tactile attraction to feeling, fingering, smearing, squishing and squashing ooey, gooey mud on a rainy afternoon. You can share that delight with your kids by making "silly gak," a colorful indoor alternative that's even more fun than mud. The bonus is that you'll only need borax and everyday household products that are probably already on hand. Making gak is a little messy--which will immediately endear it to your kids as well as amaze and entertain them for hours.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Empty an 8-oz bottle of all-purpose white glue into a mixing bowl. Fill the glue bottle with very warm water, shake it well and add to the bowl of glue. Blend thoroughly with a spoon.

    • 2

Add three drops of food coloring and blend well. Add more coloring to intensify the shade a drop at a time, mixing thoroughly until you're satisfied with the hue. Set the glue mixture aside.

    • 3

Pour 1/2 cup of very warm water into a separate mixing bowl. Add 1 tsp. of powdered borax. Stir until dissolved. This solution is called sodium borate.

    • 4

Pour 2 tbsp. of the sodium borate into the glue mixture while stirring. Continue adding the remaining borate by tablespoonfuls, stirring constantly until the silly gak thickens too much to stir anymore.

    • 5

Remove the slimy gak with your hands. Work it as if you were making dough. Squash it, pull it, prod it and stretch it. The material will feel wet and very gooey at first, but will solidify and become less sticky with handling.

    • 6

Experiment and play with it. Press coins and small toys into it to make imprints and stretch it to distort the images. Make shapes and animals with it. Use cookie cutters or roll your silly gak into logs and strings. Twist and pull a piece of it to see how far it will stretch before breaking.

    • 7

Work several drops of water into the gak when it begins to dry out and become less stretchy after playing with it.

    • 8

Refrigerate the Silly Gak in a labeled, tightly sealed plastic ziplock bag. Wash your hands well.
