How to Make a Good Tech Deck Stair or Ramp

Skateboarders who want to bring their hobby indoors can use Tech Decks, miniature skateboards they control using your hands and fingers. You can use Tech Decks on any smooth surface or use with Tech Deck obstacles such as miniature ramps and stairs, which you flip down or gain air with respectively. You can buy these obstacles or build your own, to start your own miniature skate park or with which to practice brand new tricks.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 Sheet of balsa wood, ¼ inch thick
  • Ruler
  • Marker
  • Utility knife
  • Wood glue

Instructions

  1. Stairs

    • 1

Measure and draw a 6-inch line across the bottom of a sheet of balsa wood. Measure and draw a 1-inch vertical line up from the left point of the horizontal line.

    • 2

Measure a draw a 1-inch horizontal line traveling left from the top point of the vertical line. This will create the first step.

    • 3

Continue measuring up and over by 1-inch until you form six steps. Draw a vertical line down from the end of the step to the right point on the 6-inch horizontal line.

    • 4

Draw another set of steps identical to the first on the balsa wood.

    • 5

Draw a 6-inch by 6-inch square on the balsa wood.

    • 6

Measure and draw seven 1-inch by 6-inch rectangles on the balsa wood.

    • 7

Measure and draw five ¾-inch by 6-inch rectangles on the balsa wood.

    • 8

Cut out all the shapes you drew on the balsa wood using a utility knife. The balsa wood is light enough to be cut without a saw.

    • 9

Run a line of wood glue down the back edge of the two step pieces. Position the pieces on opposite ends of the 6-inch square piece. This will act as the back of the stairs.

    • 10

Apply wood glue to the outer edge of the steps.

    • 11

Secure a 1-inch by 6-inch rectangles on the vertical portion of the bottom step. Secure another 1-by 6-inch rectangle on the horizontal portion of the step.

    • 12

Attach a ¾- inch by 6-inch rectangle to the next vertical edge of the step. The shortened width makes up for the thickness of the horizontal wood.

    • 13

Continue up the steps alternating between 1-inch by 6-inch wood for the horizontal and ¾- inch by 6-inch wood for the vertical parts of the steps. Allow the steps to dry.

    Ramp

    • 14

Draw a 6-inch horizontal line on a sheet of balsa wood. Draw a 6-inch vertical line up from the right point of the horizontal line. Connect the bottom left of the horizontal line and the top of the vertical line with a 8 1/2-inch line. Draw another triangle with the same measurements.

    • 15

Draw a 6-inch by 6-inch square on the balsa wood. Draw a 6-inch by 8 1/2 inch rectangle on the balsa wood.

    • 16

Cut out all four shapes with a utility knife

    • 17

Run wood glue along the sloped edge of each of the triangle pieces. Lay the 6-inch by 8 1/2-inch rectangle over the glue so each 8 1/2- inch side of the rectangle touches the slope of the triangle. This forms the ramp.

    • 18

Apply glue to the back edge of the ramp. Place the 6-inch square piece over the glue to add support to the back of your ramp.
