Airsoft Gun Laws in Florida

Airsoft guns are fake firearms that shoot plastic pellets, in lieu of real bullets. Although some people consider Airsoft guns toys, other people consider them weapons, and feel they should be regulated. Airsoft guns are banned entirely in the metropolitan New York City area (the five boroughs), Chicago, Washington D.C., San Francisco and parts of Michigan. Florida does allow the use of Airsoft guns, but there are restrictions in place.
  1. Age Restriction

    • According to Florida law, you must be 16 years or older, to own or fire an Airsoft gun. The only exception to this law is if you have an adult supervising the 16 year-old, who has permission from the minor's parents. If this law is knowingly violated, the minor can lose driving privileges for up to two years, while the person supervising the minor will be subject to third degree felony charges.

    The Tip of the Gun

    • All firearms that are marketed and sold as toys, are required by federal law to have a bright orange, 6mm wide tip. This is to avoid any confusion that might occur that people might have about the toy being a real weapon. Removing the orange tip is illegal, and can result in conviction of a felony.

    Velocity Limits

    • Airsoft guns are also required by law to adhere to a strict code of velocity limits when manufacturing their guns. Florida law says that the guns can't shoot more than 350 feet per second while indoors and 400 feet per second while outdoors, if using a fully automatic airsoft gun. If, however, you have a semi-automatic sniper airsoft gun (which is legal in Florida,) it can have a velocity of 500 feet per second.
