How to Remove the Air Restrictors on a Nerf Maverick

The Nerf Maverick is a toy six-barrel revolver that shoots foam darts. If you would rather shoot your own darts with the gun, or if you want to add more force to your gun's firing power, you need to do some modification to the gun. The first step to any great Nerf gun modification is to remove the air restrictors--the parts that reduce the firing power of the toy.

Things You'll Need

  • Small Phillips head screwdriver
  • Small flat head screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the three screws that hold the yellow and silver slider--the cocking mechanism--to the gun with your Phillips head screwdriver, then pull the slider off of the gun.

    • 2

Remove all of the screws from the outer casing of the gun. Pull one side of the casing away from the gun. If it does not come off easily, you probably left a screw in it by accident.

    • 3

Remove the barrel from the gun. Push the button that normally allows you to load the gun toward you. The barrel should come out.

    • 4

Hold the barrel with one of your hands and wedge your flat head screwdriver beneath the gray piece on one end that originally held the barrel to the gun. Pry the gray piece away from the barrel carefully. It and the orange plastic in the center should pop off and the center rod in the barrel should slide out. Do not lose the spring that is on the rod.

    • 5

Remove all of the screws on the other end of the barrel. You may have to swivel the gray piece around to get to them. Turn the barrel over so that it sits on the end you just removed the screws from and lift it up. The insides of the barrel should fall out of it in one piece. Remove all of the pieces except for the orange pieces and the springs (the other small, black pieces are the air restrictors).

    • 6

Cut the rods off of all of the orange pieces. Place the remaining discs--with the stubs from the rods facing up--back into the six slots on the part that you removed from the barrel. Screw this part back onto the barrel, but do not over-tighten the screws.

    • 7

Place the rod and spring back into the center of the barrel through the middle of the gray piece so that it protrudes from the other side of the barrel slightly. Place one of the springs that you removed from the air restrictors on the protruding end of the rod, then set the gray piece--that you popped off earlier with your flat head screwdriver--on top of it.

    • 8

Push the small, circular orange piece that you popped off with the gray piece into the center of the gray piece. Strike the orange piece with the back of your screwdriver to secure it tightly. When this is done, the barrel should look like it did before you began modification.

    • 9

Fit the barrel back into the outer casing and spin it until it locks into place. Screw the outer casing back onto the gun and screw the slider back on.
