How to Make a Rola Bola

A basic Rola Bola consists of a flat board balanced on top of a cylinder. This apparatus can be made using recycled PVC tubing and plywood. The Rola Bola rider stands on the board and rocks back and forth as the cylinder rolls beneath the board. Riders can stack Rola Bolas on top of each other or perform tricks while balancing such as juggling, fire spinning and acrobalance for an added challenge.

Things You'll Need

  • PVC tubing (1’ long and around 6” in diameter)
  • Plywood (at least 2’ by 3’1”)

Instructions

    • 1

Saw plywood into two planks that measure 3 ft. by 1 ft. The first of these boards will be the platform that the rider stand on and the second is a floor board, which can be placed below the PVC tubing to stabilize the Rola Bola on uneven surfaces such as grass.

    • 2

Cut two strips of plywood that measure 1 in. by 1 ft. These will serve as bumpers, which keep the board from sliding off the PVC tubing.

    • 3

Screw the bumpers from the previous step to the bottom of the balancing board. Make sure your bumpers are flush with the shorter edges of the board.

    • 4

Stick two strips of grip tape on the top of the board, where the rider will place his feet. Wrap strips of grip tape around the two ends of the PVC pipe to keep it from sliding out from under the board.
