How to Restore Steel Toys by Removing Rust

Many toys for children (and adults) are made of steel. Steel is a popular metal used in the construction of a wide variety of objects. But because steel is an alloy made from iron, steel toys will probably get rusty. This occurs when a favorite toy is played with often and the rust-proof coating wears off. If the toy is not properly maintained, rust will form. Removing the rust and restoring the steel toy is the best course of action.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the toy in warm soapy water to remove dirt and grime.

    • 2

Scrub away all rust with a steel wool pad. This removes the surface rust.

    • 3

Make a paste of 1 part lime juice and 2 parts salt in a bowl. Apply the paste to the rust stains on the toy with a sponge or paper towel. Leave on the toy for 2 to 3 hours. This is an effective and non-toxic rust removal mixture.

    • 4

Scrub the toy again with a steel wool pad to loosen the rust. Wipe away the paste and rust with a damp sponge. Dry completely with a paper towel.

    • 5

Apply a rust-proof primer to the toy with a paint brush. Allow toy to dry. The primer inhibits further rust formation.

    • 6

Touch-up the toy with rust-inhibiting paint, if needed. Let dry.
