How to Play With a Hula-Hoop

The Hula-Hoop, so coined by Whammo in the 1960s, was not a new toy. Children have been playing with hoop-shaped toys for centuries. Even with the popularity of expensive electronic toys and video games, there are still several simple and enjoyable games that can be played with a Hula-Hoop that continue to stand the test of time.

Swirl a hoop around your waist and keep it spinning by swinging your body from side to side. The most well-known use of the toy, it can be quite difficult to keep it going for more than a few minutes. Use a stopwatch and challenge other players to beat the longest time.

Place plastic cones in a large open area to make an obstacle course. Challenge the players to roll their hoop between and around the cones, and make it back to the starting point without dropping it.

    • 3

Place several hoops around your yard or an open field. Play a game of "tag" and use the hoops as "safe zones," so players standing inside them cannot be tagged. Make sure to use fewer hoops than players to keep the action going.

Join hands with several players in a circle, with a hoop hanging from one player&'s arm. Challenge the group to pass the hoop around the whole circle without letting go of one another&'s hands.
