How to Make Small Paper Airplanes

One of the oldest pastimes for school children is making paper airplanes. The designs can range from simple to complex and the variations are endless. A small paper airplane can be fashioned out of square origami paper or even rectangular notepaper with just five folds. This particular paper airplane glides a fairly long distance if thrown correctly. In addition, this design can be executed on almost any size paper. Teachers and parents could actually use this project in conjunction with teaching children about aerodynamics.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 small square of notepaper or origami paper

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the paper in half from bottom to top. Crease the fold well. Make sure the bottom edge is the folded edge.

    • 2

Grasp the top layer of the upper left corner and bring it down to the bottom edge, making sure the left side lines up evenly with the bottom. This fold should form a triangular flap. Crease the fold.

    • 3

Turn the paper over and repeat the above step for the other layer of the same corner, forming a triangular flap on the other side. Crease the fold and turn the paper back over to its original position.

    • 4

Bring the top point of the first triangular flap down to the bottom of the paper once again, lining up the left edge of the triangle with the bottom of the paper. Crease the fold well. The flap created will be a long, thin one that protrudes past the right edge of the paper.

    • 5

Turn the paper over and repeat the previous step on the opposite side. The resulting plane now looks somewhat like a dart.

    • 6

Open the outer flaps on the sides so that they are perpendicular to the rest of the airplane. Now your paper airplane is complete.
