How to Make Spy Stuff with Homemade Items

Kids love the idea of solving mysteries and spying on one another. Every good spy needs a spy kit to enable him to observe others, find clues and get to the bottom of things. Help your miniature super-sleuth act out his dreams by helping him create his own, personal spy kit. Many items that fuel the imagination require simple components that are easily found around most homes. Encourage fun make-believe with these items that fit into the average backpack.

Instructions

  1. Simple Spy Kit Components

    • 1

Paint two toilet paper tubes with camouflage colors to create binoculars. Place electrical tape around the end of both tubes. Glue the two tubes together. Reinforce it by taping the two ends together with more electrical tape.

    • 2

Paint the top of a miniature breath mint can white. Draw the face of a clock on the lid, including the hands. Glue the mint can on to a rubber wrist band to complete your watch with a secret hiding compartment.

    • 3

Squeeze juice from a lemon. Place it into an old plastic film container. Write secret messages by dipping a stick or an ink pen that no longer works in the lemon juice. Hold it near a light bulb or have a parent iron the paper. The heat warms up the invisible ink and makes the message visible.

    Periscope

    • 4

Lay a thin, rectangular box on a cutting board. Measure 1 1/2 inches from the end of the box and draw a line across the box and down both sides. Cut across the line with a box cutter. Fold the remaining attached side away from the box until it forms a 90 degree angle.

    • 5

Turn the box over. Measure 1 1/2 inches from the end of the box and draw a line across the box and down both sides. Cut across the line with a box cutter. Fold the remaining attached side away from the box until it forms a 90 degree angle.

    • 6

Open the flaps on both ends of the box. Cut them off.

    • 7

Hold one end of the box at a 90 degree angle. Tape a mirror across the opening at a 45 degree angle. Repeat this step at the other end of the box. Your "S" shaped periscope offers you a view around the corner or over the top of the fence.
