How to Make a Fancy Feather Dance Outfit

Make a feather costume dressy enough for Fancy Nancy. Your little dancer will love twirling in her feather trimmed skirt, floating with her boa and prancing with her bobbing headpiece. This costume is simple enough to make without a sewing machine, but the results will be sturdy enough for many hours of dress-up play.

Things You'll Need

  • Dance skirt
  • 3 feather boas
  • 1/4-inch elastic
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Glue gun
  • Headband

Instructions

    • 1

Sew lengths of boa around the hem of the dance skirt. Either a tutu or a bias-cut, elastic-waist skirt will work. Attach the boa to the skirt at 3-inch intervals. Sew through the edge of the skirt and the string of the boa twice at each spot. Knot your thread and cut it before moving to the next spot.

    • 2

Measure your child's wrist. Cut two pieces of elastic equal to her wrist measurement plus 1 inch. Make loops of elastic by overlapping the ends of the strips 1/2 inch and sewing the ends together. They will be just a bit loose so they do not cut off her circulation.

    • 3

Measure your child from the center of her neck to her wrist with her arms outstretched. Add 2 inches to this measurement and sew the loops of elastic to the boa this distance from the center. The boa will hang down in back just a bit and the ends will float free.

Glue a 2-foot length of boa to the headband with a glue gun. Allow the ends to trail down on one or both sides.
