How to Make Toy Shelves

Kids do not always like to pick up their toys and put them away when they are done with them, but one shelf-building approach can change that. Toy box lids can slam down on little fingers, and it's no fun when you cannot see where your favorite toys went. Build shelves that are low to the ground and easy to see through so your child can pick up his toys and find them easily again.

Things You'll Need

  • 10 Plastic crates
  • 4 Extra-long shoe laces, 42 to 43 inches

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out five crates on their sides next to each other with their open sides facing out.

    • 2

Lace each crate tightly together in back with a shoelace starting at the bottom in a criss cross pattern as if you were lacing a shoe. Tie the lace off at the top of the crates.

    • 3

Push the laced together crate shelf against the bottom of a wall with the open sides facing out, and fill it with heavy toys such as picture books to keep it from slipping around.

    • 4

Stack the other five crates on top of your new shelf with their open sides facing up or out toward you.

    • 5

Do not tie these crates together. You or your child can pick one up easily, carry it around to pick up some toys and then stack it again on the shelf of crates you tied together.
