How to Make a Toy Car Go Fast

A toy car without a motor can only go as fast as it is pushed. To get a toy car to travel fast across a surface, like a floor or sidewalk, you must add a motor. You can make a toy car go fast by building an ̶0;engine̶1; of compressed gas that will propel the vehicle forward. You will need a few household supplies and less than a half hour of your time to get your toy car zooming on its way.

Things You'll Need

  • Toy car
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Black party balloon
  • Rubber band
  • Plastic drinking straw

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the plastic drinking straw in half. Push an end of both straw halves in the black party balloon.

    • 2

Wrap the rubber band around the end of the balloon where it meets the plastic drinking straws.

    • 3

Blow into the two ends of the straws to slightly inflate the balloon. Tie a knot in the end of the rubber band to secure it to the balloon. Let the air escape to deflate the balloon.

    • 4

Place the toy car on a table with the hood facing to the left. Apply a dab of hot glue to the roof of the toy car. Place the neck of the balloon on the roof of the toy car, with the free ends of the two straws facing towards the trunk. Let the hot glue set for five minutes.

    • 5

Blow into the two ends of the straws. Stop blowing when the balloon is inflated. Place your fingers over the ends of the two straws to keep the air from the balloon from escaping.

    • 6

Place the toy car on the floor. Aim the front of the car towards a far wall. Remove your fingers from the two straws. Watch the toy car zoom across the floor as the compressed air from your breath shoots out of the balloon and through the ̶0;exhaust̶1; of the two straws.
