How to Make the Best Paper Aeroplane

The best paper aeroplane, or paper airplane, is the simplest one, as this is the one that children will learn quickly and will remember their entire lives. A good paper airplane can fly dozens of feet and can be reused over and over until it is completely worn out. With simple instructions, an inexpensive stack of paper can provide quality, educational enjoyment for children while teaching them basic knowledge of aeronautics and the principles of flight.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out a piece of clean, smooth, heavy-weight paper. The heavier the paper, the better it will fly. Although lighter paper will work just fine, it will not fly as far. The paper should be laid out horizontally, as a landscape.

    • 2

Fold the piece of paper in half lengthwise so that you make a thin, long rectangle. This fold can be easily remembered as the "hot dog" fold, as it is long and thin, rather than the "hamburger" fold, which is shorter and wider. Position the paper with the crease side on the bottom and the open end on top.

    • 3

Fold the front piece of the top left corner down to the bottom crease. The folded section should follow the line of the original "hot dog" crease. Flip the airplane over and do the same fold on the corresponding side of the plane so that it mirrors the other side.

    • 4

Holding the paper in the original position, fold one side down so that the the top of the paper lines up with the crease on the bottom. It should form a long, thin triangle with the same point as the first fold. Repeat this fold one more time on this side so that you have made three folds in all. Apply these two folds to the other side so that both sides are perfect mirror images.

    • 5

Open the plane up a little bit and grasp it on the bottom, where the original crease was. The top of the plane should be formed by two long, unbroken triangles, while the bottom section should be a collection of many folds. The plane should be thrown by holding it near the nose of the plane, on the bottom side.
