The Pattern
Print an online ball pattern template.
Make your own pattern as an alternative to a web template. Start by using a ruler to draw an 8-inch line on paper.
Measure 4 inches down the 8-inch line to the center. Draw a dot at the 4-inch mark.
Measure 1 1/8 inch to the right of the 4-inch dot. Mark another dot.
Measure 1 1/8 inch to the left of the original dot at the 4-inch center. Mark another dot. The center of the pattern now measures about 2 1/4 inches.
Draw an arched line to the right of the 8-inch line, from the top of the straight line to the bottom of the line, drawing through the right dot. Repeat for the left side of the line/dot. The result is a "flower petal" type pattern. Cut out the pattern.
Making the Ball
Fold your fabric with the pattern sides of the fabric touching. Looking at the back side of the fabric, pin the pattern through both layers of fabric. According to PurlSoho.com, you'll need to cut eight pieces with this pattern to make this ball.
Lay your eight fabric pieces pattern side up.
Select two pieces. Place one piece on your work surface right side up. Place the second piece, back side facing you, on top of the first piece, aligning the edges. Pin the left edges. Repeat for the other six pieces, forming four pinned sections of two pieces each.
Sew along the pinned edges, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance and a straight stitch. Remove the pins and unfold the four sections.
Select two sections. Place one section on the work surface, unfolded, pattern side up. Unfold the second section and place it on top of the first section, with the back side of the fabric facing you. Align and pin the left edges. Repeat with the remaining two sections.
Sew along the pinned edges, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance and a straight stitch. Remove the pins.
Unfold the two sections, which form the two halves of the ball. Each half consists of four sewn fabric pieces. Place one half on the work surface, pattern side up. Place the other half on top of the first half, with the back side of the fabric facing you. Align and pin the edges.
Sew one pinned edge, using a straight stitch and a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
Sew half of the other pinned edge, leaving a hole for stuffing the ball.
Remove the pins and turn the ball right-side out through the hole.
Use a pencil to poke the stuffing through the hole. Fold the raw edges of the hole inside and pin them. Sew the hole closed, by hand with a needle and thread, using an over-sewing stitch.
