How to Make a Nerf Dart Gun From Things Around the House

Nerf brand toy guns are all designed to fire soft foam darts at their target. You can make your own Nerf-type dart gun from a few items commonly found around the house. You will also need Nerf darts, which can be purchased from a hobby store or a toy store. Adult supervision is required if a child is making the Nerf dart gun since a cutting edge will be used.

Things You'll Need

Disposable plastic ballpoint pen
Pliers
Disposable mechanical pencil
Two rubber bands
Scissors
Utility knife
Duct tape
Nerf dart

Instructions

- 1
  Hold the disposable plastic ballpoint pen by the back end in your left hand (reverse this for ̶0;lefties̶1;). Hold the pliers in your right hand.

  Clamp the jaws of the pliers around the metal barrel at the front of the disposable plastic ballpoint pen. Twist the pliers to pull off the metal barrel.

  Shake the disposable plastic ballpoint pen to dislodge the ink cartridge. Pull the ink cartridge out of the front of the plastic ball point pen with your fingers.

  Clamp the jaws of the pliers around the back end cap on the back end of the disposable plastic ballpoint pen. Twist the pliers to pull off the back end cap. Discard the back end cap and the ink cartridge properly.

  Hold the disposable mechanical pencil by the back end in your left hand (reverse this for ̶0;lefties̶1;). Hold the pliers in your right hand.

  Clamp the jaws of the pliers around the metal barrel at the front of the disposable mechanical pencil. Twist the pliers to pull off the metal barrel.

  Shake the disposable mechanical pencil to dislodge the lead cartridge insert. Pull the lead cartridge insert out of the front of the disposable mechanical pencil with your fingers. Discard the mechanical pencil and the metal barrel properly.

  Insert the lead cartridge insert into the hole at the back end of the disposable plastic ballpoint pen.

  Cut a notch in the back end of the disposable plastic ballpoint pen with the utility knife.

  Insert the loop of a rubber band into the notch. Slide the loop of the rubber band into the notch.

  Stretch the rubber band over to the front end of the disposable plastic pen. Place the loop of the rubber band over the front end of the disposable plastic pen.

  Wrap a piece of duct tape around the edge at the front end of the disposable plastic pen.

  Insert the loop of the other rubber band into the notch at the back end of the disposable plastic pen. Slide the loop of the rubber band into the notch.

  Stretch the rubber band over to the front end of the disposable plastic pen. Place the loop of the rubber band over the front end of the disposable plastic pen.

  Wrap a piece of duct tape around the edge at the front end of the disposable plastic pen.

  Insert the Nerf dart into the front end of the disposable plastic pen that you have made into a Nerf gun dart gun using things found around the house.

  Hold your Nerf dart gun at the middle with the fingers of your left hand. Aim your Nerf dart gun at a far wall.

  Grab hold of the rubber bands and the lead cartridge insert with the fingers of your right hand.

  Pull back on the rubber bands and the lead cartridge inset. Release the rubber bands and the lead cartridge insert to fire the dart from your Nerf dart gun at the far wall.
