Things You'll Need
Instructions
Choose the fabric for your toy kayak. To closely resemble a kayak, you can try using a water-resistant material, such as a marine-grade vinyl. If you would prefer to make a plush toy, consider using felt or cotton.
Trace the shape of the kayak you would like to create. Add one inch along each side for seam allowances and cut out your pattern.
Fold your fabric in half, print-side in. Position your kayak pattern over your doubled material. Pin in place with straight pins and cut out your material. Pin your two kayak pieces together along the bottom edge.
Cut a piece to fit between your two side kayak pieces to act as the deck of the kayak. This fabric should be the same color as your side pieces. Pin your three to pieces together (print-side-in) to create the rough shape.
Sew your kayak along the bottom side. Then, sew the deck along the outer top edges. Leave a one inch opening along the side. Turn your right-side-out through the one inch opening.
Stuff your toy kayak with cotton batting through the hole. Use a chopstick to completely fill the corners. Sew the opening closed after your kayak is stuffed.
Cut a piece of fabric to resemble a seat. This can be as simple as a small oval shape in a contrasting color. Hot glue or sew this oval in place on your kayak.
Fold your second piece of fabric in half to create your paddle. Trace the shape of the paddle you would like to create, pin it together with the print-side-in, leaving a small opening to turn the paddle right-side-out once you finish sewing. Stuff with cotton and sew your opening closed. Attach this paddle to the kayak with hot glue.
Add fabric pieces to act as decals, deck hatches or rudder. To personalize your kayak toy, consider adding more details for character. Hot glue or sew the name of the kayak to the side or even create a fabric person to sit in the seat.
