How to Make Foam Darts for Shooting Air Guns

Nerf dart guns are a lot of fun. However, the more fun you have, it seems, the more darts you lose. If you don't want to keep buying new darts, why not make your own? The process is relatively simple but it will take some skill and patience to master. Your foam darts will be modified and custom, but they should fly straight and true. If not, adjust the weight or length to match your gun and their performance will improve.

Things You'll Need

  • Foam backer rod
  • Tape
  • Heat gun or hair dryer
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • 1/4-inch plastic caps or BBs

Instructions

    • 1

Tape one end of the foam backer rod to a table or the floor using masking tape or duct tape. Stretch the backing across the table or floor and tape down the other end. Apply heat lightly to the surface of the rod using a heat gun or hair dryer. This removes the slight curl in the backer board.

    • 2

Cut the backer into lengths of at least 1 inch and up to 2 inches. The length you use for your darts depends on the type of gun you have. Most Nerf guns use a 1 1/2-inch dart. Try all three lengths mentioned here to see which works best.

    • 3

Apply a dab of hot glue to one end of the dart using a hot glue gun. Just use enough to cover the top of the dart and do not allow too much of the glue to slide down into the hole. If it does, wipe away the glue and start again.

    • 4

Place a BB or plastic cap on the glue and secure it in place after it has had a few seconds to cool. Let the dart dry for about 20 minutes.

    • 5

Repeat this process as necessary to make as many darts as you need.
