The Fire Hazards of an Easy Bake Oven

For years, the Easy Bake Oven has taught kids how to cook. Unfortunately, the toy has fire hazards. According to the Consumer Reports website, the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled 985,000 ovens since May, 2006. These fire hazards from the oven's high temperature include second and third-degree burns, as well as entrapment.
  1. Oven Temperature

    • The Easy Bake Oven heats up to 400 degrees F. Children who touch the inside or outside of the oven may get burnt. They may even experience second or third-degree burns. Even touching the pan from the Easy Bake oven can cause burns.

    Electrical Hazards

    • The CPSC and Hasbro advise parents to keep the toy away from children under 8 years of age. Five incidents of burns involved children 3 to 5 years of age. Since it's an electrical product, supervision is required. If plugged for too long, the oven could burst into flames. It's imperative that parents monitor the child's use of the Easy Bake Oven.

    Oven Opening

    • When the oven is open, children can get their hands caught inside. According to the Hasbro website, there have been 249 reports of this instance. Out of the report, there were 77 burns, 16 of which were second or third-degree burns. The Easy Bake Company also received a report of a burn that required amputation to a 5-year-old girl. Children should keep their hands out of the Easy Bake Oven.
