Magnetic Letters
Magnetic letters are a simple toy you can use to help kids learn how to read. You also can use the letters to improve their reading skills. Place the letters in a prominent location in your home or classroom. Let your child's imagination run wild. For younger children who are just learning their letters, use magnetic letters for letter identification. Older children can spell out words using invented spelling (i.e., guessing at the correct spelling of words) or by copying words in the stories they are reading. Older children also can write messages using magnetic letters--they will not have to worry about handwriting or precision.
Reading Flashcards
Reading flashcards help children learn how to read. Buy packs of flashcards or make them yourself by writing a sight word on each notecard. Although you can drill your child using reading flashcards, she probably will find it more interesting if you use the cards as part of a game. For example, spread the flashcards out on a table and ask your child, "Can you give the 'and' card to Teddy Bear?" When you read a book to your child, encourage her to look for sight words, or flashcard words, and then find the card with that word from the pile. These activities will help your child identify common sight words.
Electronic Toys
One of the advantages of raising kids today is the ability to use technology to help them learn. Electronic toys that teach reading are fun for children of all ages. Younger kids can enjoy toys with letters that "speak" their sounds or names as you press on their buttons. Children who are just learning to read may enjoy books that have buttons on the side for them to press at certain points in the book. Older kids who are beginning to read more challenging books can use special toy packages, which come with wands they can move across the words of specialized books to hear them aloud. Use electronic toys for a fun and interactive learning experience.
