How to Make a Nerf Gun From Scratch

NERF guns have been popular toys for generations because they are simple guns using compressed air to shoot a projectile. You can make your own NERF-type gun with a few parts purchased from a hardware store. The NERF gun you make will be able to shoot a NERF dart a great distance and will have the individuality that a store-bought NERF gun can't have. Make sure to provide adult supervision for young children making or using the NERF gun.

Things You'll Need

2-liter soda bottle
Utility knife
Basketball pump
Hot glue gun
1 piece PVC pipe, 1/2 inch wide and 4 inches long
1 PVC pipe valve, 1/2 inch wide
1 piece PVC pipe, 1/2 inch wide and 2 feet long
2 12-inch wooden rulers
NERF dart

Instructions

  Empty the soda out of the 2 liter soda bottle, and let the soda bottle dry. Cut a hole in the side of the soda bottle with the utility knife.

  Insert the end of the basketball pump into the hole in the soda bottle. Hot-glue the end of the basketball pump to the soda bottle, and let the glue dry.

  Insert the 4-inch long PVC pipe into the spout of the 2 liter soda bottle. Hot-glue the PVC pipe to the soda bottle, and let the glue dry.

  Insert the other end of the the PVC pipe into the PVC pipe valve. Hot-glue the PVC pipe to the PVC pipe valve, and let the glue dry.

  Insert one end of the 2-foot long PVC pipe into the PVC pipe valve. Hot-glue the end of the PVC pipe to the PVC pipe valve, and let the glue dry.

  Hot-glue the end of a wooden ruler to one side of the basketball pump with the free end pointing upward. Hot-glue the end of another wooden ruler to the other side of the basketball pump with the free end pointing upward.

  Hot-glue the top end of one of the wooden rulers to the side of the 2 liter soda bottle to keep the basketball pump from moving when being pumped. Hot-glue the top end of the other wooden ruler to the other side of the 2 liter soda bottle to keep the basketball pump from moving when being pumped. Let the glue set.

  Insert a NERF dart into the end of the PVC pipe. Pump the basketball pump five times. Aim the NERF gun at a target. and release the valve on the PVC pipe valve to fire the NERF dart.
