RC Truck Tips

RC trucks are miniature remote controlled motorized trucks. Everyone from children to adult hobbyists race RC trucks. There are many types of RC trucks, and understanding which truck to buy and other important tips can help you maximize your fun.
  1. Electric vs. Nitro

    • Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of an electric RC truck versus a nitro truck can help you decide which is right for you. Electric RC trucks run on a rechargeable battery that has enough energy to race about 10 to 15 minutes with a recharge time of 15 to 30. They drive about 10 to 25 mph depending on their size. They are generally cheaper than nitro vehicles but don't have the power or speed. A nitro truck runs on specially formulated, somewhat flammable fuel, making them louder and smellier. They can run for about 15 minutes on a tank of gas and reach speeds of 20 to 40 mph. They are more expensive than electric trucks but their speed and power benefits make them perfect for a serious RC truck enthusiast.

    Chose Your Environment

    • After you're purchased your truck, you should choose your racing environment carefully. Avoid crowded or busy areas. There is nothing worse than taking your truck out for its first run only to find it crushed under the tire of a real truck or worse, hurting someone and getting sued. Find a safe and open area for racing--an empty parking lot is perfect if you live in an urban area. Some RC trucks can't handle obstacles like rocks, puddles or logs, so it's best to avoid them. However, tougher models like a nitro-powered monster truck are built for off-road racing and can tackle these obstacles.

    Maintenance Tips

    • When performing maintenance or adjustments to your RC truck, it's important to keep a few things in mind. If you find your antenna too long for any reason, don't cut it or your car won't run. Instead, pull the wire into the receiver box. Store all fluids and lubes in plastic syringes, making them easier to apply when the time comes. Remember to always remove all fuel from your engine after you're done. Stagnant fuel can be a potential fire hazard. Use the syringes to remove it and place it back into your fuel can. Store your fuel can in a cool, safe area. After you're removed the fuel, apply your after-run oil to the carbonator and engine head. This will keep your engine running smoothly. Make sure to replace your air filters after around an hour of playing time.
