Are Lava Lamps Dangerous?

The lava lamp debuted in 1963; originally called the Astro lamp and invented by Edward Walker, it was a 15-year project in the making. These lamps have been a staple in the American home for people young and old for years, and the trend doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.
  1. Glass

    • As with any glass accessory, these lamps can pose a major hazard if handled improperly and broken. Glass of all kinds should be kept out of the reach of small children. Lava lamps should be handled with care.

    Heat

    • A lava lamp can become very hot, especially if left on longer than intended, and should never be touched while turned on. If the lava lamp is broken, the oil-based liquid inside could be extremely hot and should be avoided until it cools.

    Electricity

    • Any electrical appliance must be used with proper caution and should be kept away from all water sources. Always use the appropriate bulb for your lamp and ensure that all cords are in good condition to avoid fire hazards.

    Fire

    • Lava lamps can become extremely hot to the touch and therefore must be kept in clutter-free spaces. Paper can be easily ignited by the heat of some lava lamps and could pose a serious danger.

    Explosion

    • Lava lamps should never be placed on the stove or heated by any other means other than the intended way, with appropriate-wattage bulb. Misuse can result in fatal injury upon explosion.
