How to Teach Your Furby

A Furby is a toy from Hasbro that is programmed to speak in its own language, known as Furbish. Over time, it will accumulate more English. While you will not be able to teach your Furby to speak English completely, you can get it to a point where about 80 percent of the words that it speaks are English.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate your Furby's sensors. Your Furby has sensors located in the forehead above the eyes, in the middle of the stomach below the mouth, on the back above the tail or where the tail would be and underneath one of the ears. These are the sensors that you will address when you want to interact with your Furby.

    • 2

Play with your Furby. This includes doing things such as talking with it, moving it from side to side and learning more about how to shut it down and wake it back up. At this point, you are getting your Furby through its life stages. Furbies have four three-hour long life stages, and after each stage, they will be able to learn more and more English. It takes about 12 hours of active play for your Furby to get all the English that it is capable of.

    • 3

Learn Furbish. Your Furby speaks Furbish, and there will be a dictionary that comes with the Furby that will clue you in to what your Furby is saying. Adoptafurby.com also has a complete Furby dictionary that can help you learn what is going on.

Repeat words. When you want your Furby to learn a certain word or a certain phrase, keep repeating the words over and over again.

    • 5

Give positive reinforcement. One thing that has been shown to work is to couple the repetition of the words with petting the Furby on the head. The Furby knows that you are petting it because of the light sensor on the top of its head, and repetition of the word coupled with petting can encourage a faster rate of learning.
