The Trampoline Effect
Moon shoes are basically plastic blocks with heavy-duty rubber bands stretched across them and straps on the tops of them where you slip in your feet. They vary in size for either a child's or adult's feet, and the weight these large rubber bands can support is simply adjusted by adding or subtracting rubber bands. The feeling created is one of near weightlessness because with each step you take, the rubber bands lift you up, as if you were standing on mini-trampolines. This also makes it increasingly difficult to walk, which may be fun for a while.
Rubber Band Upkeep
Because the rubber bands are the most important part of the design of the moon shoes, it is important to keep them dry, not stretch them out too much and buy a lot of spares from a toy store or home supply store. When walking in the moon shoes, it may be difficult to keep your balance, which is frustrating to many people and makes them not really want to use the toy. But others who have stuck with it and stretched the rubber bands just right to support their weight have developed the unique core strength and skill to walk with them effectively.
Hazards of Moon Shoes
As your feet or your child's feet are now attached to a rather heavy piece of plastic on each foot, there are certain hazards to keep in mind when playing in moon shoes. Don't use them in an area where falling could be especially dangerous, such as the edge of a deck. Don't play with them in water or near a pool, as they are heavy enough, even in water, to pull a child who is an inexperienced swimmer under the surface. The safest place to use them is where there is a soft place to fall, such as on mats or a lawn of grass.
