Holding
Sit down in a comfortable chair for easier playing. Keep your back straight and you shoulders down. Relax your body and your muscles. This can help you enjoy your playing more fully. Accordions vary in size, so if you don't feel comfortable holding the accordion in your hands, rest it on your left knee. Fit your right hand into the handle near the keyboard. Your left hand should fit into the handle on the left hand, with your left fingers on the bass pumps. You are now ready to play.
Pumping
Pull the accordion with your left hand. This will pump air inside. Hold the accordion steady with your right as you pull out with your left. Once you've filled the accordion, push it back to the right. Air will then be forced through the accordion reeds. The reeds will vibrate and create music. Continually pump the accordion as you play to keep your accordion full of air. Pushing the pump back slowly will cause the music to play softly, but pumping it hard will cause it to play loudly. This can help control the dynamics of your music.
Keyboard
Use your right fingers to play the keyboard. The keyboard has the same scale method as a piano. The white keys cycle through octaves from A to G while the black keys are the flat and sharps. Move your finger on the keyboard as if you were playing a piano. This will create melodies and chords. Chord patterns are the same as on a piano. The keyboard is limited to higher tones with the bass tones being controlled by your left hand.
Bass Pumps
The bass pumps should be controlled with your left fingers. Look at these pumps for a moment before playing. They are laid out in the same way as a piano, but it can be difficult to see this as the keys are all black and don't alternate black and white the way a piano does. Carefully looking at the pumps will reveal the pattern. While playing, holding down a bass pump creates a bass tone. This gives your melodies a harmonic bed and thickens the sound of your playing.
