How to Store a Battery

Batteries make some of our favorite products work. We need them for our portable CD players, and our kids need them to produce sound in their toys. Unfortunately, batteries are quite dangerous if you do not use them correctly. They can leak acid, and they can also explode. It is important that you store your batteries properly, so that no unnecessary accidents happen.

Instructions

    • 1

Leave your brand-new batteries in their store packaging if you do not need to use them right away.

    • 2

Feel each battery you plan on storing. If it is hot, throw it away. Only keep the batteries that are cool.

    • 3

Separate the old batteries and the new batteries. You cannot store these two batteries together. Make two piles.

    • 4

Place the old batteries in a plastic bag. Do not put more than two or three batteries in each plastic bag. You do not want the terminals to touch each other, and having more than three batteries in each bag increases the chance that this will happen. Do the same thing with new batteries that are not in their original packaging.

    • 5

Place the plastic bags in a shoe box, and set the shoe box in a cool, dark place. You need one shoe box for old batteries and one for the new batteries. The place you choose to store your batteries should have a temperature that is below 130 degrees Fahrenheit.
