How to Modify a Scout Nerf Gun

The Nerf Scout is part of the N Strike series of spring guns manufactured by the Hasbro toy company. Nerf guns are designed to fire small foam projectiles for the purpose of target shooting and games of tag. The projectiles feature either a small plastic suction cup or impact absorbing tip. Modifying a Scout is a good way to increase power and efficiency of the gun.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what accessories are available from the manufacturer and through toy and big-box stores. The Hasbro Nerf web site features many upgrades for modification. Visit websites and local stores such as Toys '"R" Us and Wal-Mart to purchase accessories.

    • 2

Consider installing a red dot point sight such as the Nerf Mission Kit Pinpoint Sight. This is a red dot site designed for the player to look through and acquire a target. The site mounts onto the accessory rail along the top of the gun.

    • 3

Apply a small amount of 100 percent pure silicone spray lubricant to the inside of the barrel. Spray only a small amount into the barrel using a spray extension tube, which is supplied by many manufacturers with cans of silicone. A light coating of silicone will reduce friction in the barrel and help increase projectile speed.

    • 4

Modify the spring of the Scout to increase feet-per-second speed. Access the spring by using a screwdriver to remove any screws holding the two halves of the gun together.

    • 5

Remove the spring from the assembly and gently stretch the spring. This will increase the compression of the spring when the gun is cocked, thus making the foam dart fly faster. Apply a lite coating of silicone spray and reassemble.
