Uses for Silly Putty

The amazing bendable bouncing rubber was invented in 1943 amid fears of a rubber shortage. Silly Putty's release to the public was not until 1950 and since then has been sent to space, exhibited in the Smithsonian and inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame. This childhood favorite was still being produced in 2009 and still sold in the same colored eggs from a half-century ago.
  1. Bouncing

    • When you roll the putty into a ball it will bounce around any smooth, hard surface. Other shapes will bounce as well, but in unpredictable directions.

    Copying

    • The ink found on newspapers and older comic books can be copied onto a piece of silly putty by spreading the substance over the ink and lifting up. The image can then be stretched and warped.

    Stress

    • Molding Silly Putty into a ball or cube and then smashing it is one way to use the putty as a stress relief tool. Grumpy employees can mold it into the shape of their boss.

    Home Improvement

    • While Silly Putty is seen as able to be constantly remolded, it can find a permanent use around the home to fill holes in walls, or add height to an otherwise unbalanced table.

    Cleaning

    • Place Silly Putty in your hand and then pat your clothing with it to remove lint and fur. It can also be used on computer keyboard to clear away any lingering dust.
