How to Wire 5 9V Batteries in a Series

Connecting batteries in a series is a way to multiply the voltage of the batteries while maintaining their given capacity. For example, five 9-volt batteries connected in series will produce 45 volts of power. Using 9-volt batteries in series is a good technique to employ when your application requires a higher voltage equal to a multiple of 9, such as a trolling motor for a fishing boat.

Instructions

    • 1

Align your batteries in the physical orientation that fits your application and allows for connecting the batteries with the jumper cables.

    • 2

Connect a jumper wire between the negative terminal of the first battery and the positive terminal of the second battery.

    • 3

Repeat these connections for the remaining batteries, connecting the negative terminal of the previous battery to the positive terminal of the next battery. You will be left with an open positive terminal on the first battery, and an open negative terminal on the fifth battery.

    • 4

Connect the negative terminal of the fifth battery to the negative lead of the application you are powering.

    • 5

Connect the positive terminal of the first battery to the positive lead of the application you are powering.
