How to Connect Magnet Toys

Magnetic building toys come in two main categories. The first is a system of plastic rods with magnets embedded in each end. These come with metal ball bearings as connectors. The second type is a set of flat plastic shapes, such as triangles and squares, that have magnetic strips on all sides.

Instructions

  1. Flat Shapes

    • 1

Lay one square, four rectangles of the same size and four triangles of the same size on a flat surface.

    • 2

Place one rectangle against the edge of the square so they form an "L" shape. Place a second rectangle against the square and first rectangle so the rectangles form a 90-degree angle. Add two more rectangles this way to form a cube with no top.

    • 3

Put the bottom edge of a triangle against the top edge of one of the rectangles. The triangle should stick straight up. Put three more triangles on the top edges of the other three rectangles.

    • 4

Gently push the triangles toward each other at the same time until their tips meet. This should form a four-sided roof.

    Rods and Ball Bearings

    • 5

Lay one ball bearing on a flat surface. Attach six rods to the bearing in a circle so the figure looks like the inside of a wagon wheel.

    • 6

Place a ball bearing on the outward end of each rod.

    • 7

Place one rod in each space between ball bearings. This should form a hexagon.
