Vertical Orbit
An orbit, the most basic Astrojax move, happens when one end ball makes a circle around the free middle one. Start by holding one end ball by the fingertips of your preferred hand.
Take the other end ball with your free hand and drop it.
Each time the ball hits the bottom of its motion, do a small, quick flick with your wrist or move your arm toward your body to keep the orbiting ball moving in a vertical circle.
Once you've mastered the basic orbit, try a juggling trick called switches. A switch occurs when you drop one ball to catch another. Wait until the orbiting ball is at the top of its circle.
Drop the end ball you were holding and catch the end ball that was orbiting. The trick should look the same, but the balls have switched places.
Butterfly
Start by doing a vertical orbit.
To achieve the horizontal figure eight appearance of the butterfly trick, start to move your hand from left to right.
When the middle ball reaches the top of its motion on one side, move your hand to the opposite direction. On the other side, the middle ball should reach the bottom of its motion when you move your hand to the other direction.
Once you get the figure-eight going, you shouldn't have to move your hand more than a couple of inches back and forth.
Finger Flips
A finger flip is the most basic move using the string. Hold the middle ball and an end ball about shoulder length apart in front of your body. Extend your pointer finger on the hand holding the end ball away from your body.
Swing the end ball you are not holding in a circular motion toward the extending pointer finger.
With your finger, catch the string in in between the middle ball and the swinging end ball and reverse the circular motion.
When the ball reaches the pointer finger in the opposite direction, stop the motion and reverse direction again.
To do a more advanced trick, the finger flip plus, let the free ball wrap in a circle around your finger before reversing its direction.
