How to Tie a Kite

Tying the kite line to the underside of a kite is important for kite flying success. Make sure that you incorporate all four points of the kite into the tying so that the kite will be supported properly by the kite line and will fly correctly when it is in the air.

Things You'll Need

  • Sharp needle
  • Heavy polyester thread
  • Scissors
  • Kite line
  • Tape measure

Instructions

    • 1

Find the horizontal wood piece that supports the kite.

    • 2

Place a 12-inch length of thread onto the needle. Do not knot the thread.

    • 3

Insert the needle through the kite from the front of the kite at the center right at the point of the horizontal wood piece on the underside of the kite. Leave a tail of thread that is several inches long on the front of the kite. Wrap the thread around the wood piece and insert the needle back through the kite to the front again. Tie the two ends of the thread together securely and clip off the excess thread.

    • 4

Cut a length of kite string that will stretch between the top and the bottom of the kite supports and add approximately 6 inches for attaching.

    • 5

Securely tie one end of the kite string to the top of the kite support. If there is a notch in the kite support, use this to wrap the kite string around the support and tie the kite string and make it secure.

    • 6

Bring the string down toward the bottom of the kite and attach the string to the bottom point of the kite in the same fashion as you did at the top of the kite. The string should be somewhat taut, but not so tight that it bends the kite supports.

    • 7

Cut another length of kite string that will stretch between the left side and the right side of the kite supports and add approximately 6 inches for attaching.

    • 8

Tie one end of the kite string to the left side of the kite support securely. If there is a notch in the kite support, use this to wrap the kite string around the support and tie the kite string and make it secure.

    • 9

Bring the string across toward the right side of the kite and attach the string to the right point of the kite in the same fashion as you did at the left side of the kite. The string should be somewhat taut, but not so tight that it bends the kite supports.

    • 10

Tie the end of your kite flying string to the center point where all four of the attached strings meet. Tie this knot several times to make it secure. The other end of this string should be the bulk of your kite string that is rolled or wrapped around a holder for flying the kite. The kite is now ready to fly.
