History
Edward Craven Walker invented the lava lamp. He first encountered the idea in 1948, and perfected his invention for mass production in 1963.
Types
While lava lamps are now offered in endless size and color combinations, the first lamps had a gold base with only yellow or blue liquid and red or white lava.
Function
Lava lamps are composed of a base containing a lightbulb beneath a glass tube of water and "lava." The lightbulb serves to heat up the "lava" solution in the lamp, causing it to float up and down in the water.
Identification
The lava lamp was first called an Astro Globe. It was later marketed as a Lava Lite and is now commonly referred to as a Lava Lamp.
Warning
Lava lamps can be extremely hot if left on for extended periods of time and should never be heated over any other source as the glass tube will explode if it becomes too hot.
