How to Make Lava Lamps for Kids

Making your kids a lava lamp is safe, fun and easy. Of course, it's not a "real" lava lamp, like the commercially produced lights which are made using trade secrets, and aren't safe for kids. But this version actually works basically the same way that a commercial lava lamp does, using two liquids that will not mix together. The oil isn't as dense as the water is, so it will always float to the top. Your kids can help with this inexpensive and quickly made project, and they'll be fascinated by their very own lava lamps.

Instructions

    • 1

Add vegetable or baby oil to the jar until it's about a third full.

    • 2

Sprinkle about a teaspoonful of glitter, sequins or small beads onto the oil.

    • 3

Put enough water into the jar to almost fill it.

    • 4

Add food coloring, a drop at a time, until the water deepens to a shade that you like.

    • 5

Put the lid on the jar, and tighten it very well. Have the kids flip the jar over and back, and shake it up as much as they can. Marvel with them at the fascinating action of the contents of the kid-safe lava lamp.
