Get the right size for the situation. A small Nerf gun is perfect for a backup or for discreetly reaching around tight corners and getting a lock on your target. Larger Nerf guns are heavier and harder to run with, but usually make up for with their large ammo clip and ability to take out multiple targets quickly.
Choose your level of automation. Manual Nerf guns are the weakest, and should only be used as a last resort. Semi-automatic Nerf guns are the minimum, with large clips being essential if you want to have even the slightest chance of survival. If you want to dominate the playing field, however, including one or more fully automatic Nerf guns in your arsenal will accomplish this easily.
Find a Nerf gun with a long range and high accuracy. While fully automatics typically feature the best range and enough ammo to make accuracy irrelevant, lesser weapons require further investigation. Test your weapons for range and accuracy before battle to understand their limitations. Don't wait until you're engaged with the enemy, only to discover the critical blow falls short of its target.
Get the right capacity. The more shots you can take before reloading, the greater your chance of victory. Make sure the Nerf gun you choose is of a higher capacity than that of your enemy's.
Consider reload time. While it's essential that your primary weapon is pressurized, this type of system must be avoided on your backup Nerf gun. A spring-loaded or other equally fast mechanism could mean the difference between life and death.

Use reviews to help with your initial selection, but with the huge number of Nerf guns out there with highly varied features, only experience can tell you which one to use in which situation--which one will turn out to be your best friend, and which one will turn out to be your worst enemy.
